Grass-to-pellet fuel, very interesting. Have the energy levels been worked out? How much energy is required to make a quantity of pellets and, then, how much energy is latent in that quantity? What would that ratio be?

      Hi Robert,
It takes 9 gallons of diesel fuel to make a ton of grass pellets (16,000,000 BTU per ton) this is due the unit being mobile. A stationary desification plant will use less energy. Wood pellets require more energy then grass due to the required drying process. Grasses dry in the field after harvest. Grass, wood and biomass pellets have approx. 8,000 to 8,500 BTUs per pound, some grasses have been tested at 8,900 BTUs per pound.
One ton of pellet fuel is equivalent to 115 gallons of heating oil = pellet fuel $209 to $235 per ton vs heating oil at $425.50 for 115 gallons ($3.70 per gallon). This is based on both fuels producing 16 million btu.
      Thanks for asking.
